Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

If you are an F-1 student, CPT enables you to work in paid or unpaid positions while taking classes. CPT authorization permits you to work off-campus in positions that directly relate to your program of study and are integral to your program’s curriculum. You must have a job offer letter and approval from your academic advisor in order for CPT to be authorized by the Office of International Student Success and Global Engagement.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

If you are an F-1 student, OPT enables you to work in a job that directly relates to your program of study. OPT authorization is provided by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Requests for authorization take three to four months to process and require an application fee. The OPT work period is generally for one year with a possible extension of an additional 24 months if your field of study is in an approved science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) field.
